Given that we had been traveling to Yountville almost every night to eat at a restaurant located in the town (ie Ad Hoc, Bottega, Redd), we thought we would check out the town during daylight. lol. So one day we walked around and found that there really wasn’t much to the town, but of course our stomachs were hungry so we stepped into Bistro Jeanty.
One of Cookie Monster’s very good friends had been to Napa before us and had apparently had a great meal here. That inspired us to go in. The restaurant definitely isn’t fancy or anything but the food is very classically French. The looks of the restaurant were deceiving (it looks pretty casual). But hey, we were eating at another Michelin rated restaurant.
We sat outside – it was a beautiful day and for some reason, we ordered a full meal: appetizer, main and dessert! Oink oink.
Cookie Monster started with heirloom tomato salad:
Dressed with balsamic vinegar and some olive oil the restaurant kept this salad very simple. Some basil leaves and a dusting of parmesan finished off the plate. The tomatoes are phenomenal in Napa so this was a bright sunny appetizer.
I got the green bean salad with oven roasted tomatoes and parmesan cheese:
Yet another wonderful salad in Napa! I have eaten more salads that week than ever
. The green beans still had a nice crunch to them and the parmesan had a nice nutty bite. Have you ever roasted tomatoes? It will make the worst tomatoes incredibly sweet. Roasting tomatoes only enhances that sugary tomato taste and these tomatoes did not disappoint.
For main course, Cookie Monster got the beef stew:
Served with mashed potatoes and buttered peas and carrots, this was a very comforting dish. The beef was SO tender it could have been short ribs. I was incredibly jealous of him – I wanted it! Honestly, that beef! so tender, so soft……
I got the sole meuniere – figured I was at a French restaurant and they would do it right:
Petrale sole fillet served with mashed potatoes in a lemon-caper butter sauce. Yup. Butter sauce. That’s the traditional preparation of this dish so if you are looking to be light and healthy by going with a fish course, this is not the one to get. If you want light flaky fish that melts in your mouth but accented with the richness of butter, this is for you. Sole meuniere is so classically French. A little goes a long way so I only managed to get through half. The beef stew was still my favorite though.
We ALSO got dessert: chocolate mousse creme brulee:
This custardy delight had a surprise at the bottom of it…the chocolate mousse.
Innards:
Talk about layering decadence upon decadence!
The meal was fab! And rich….we were pretty stuffed when we walked out of there but what a wonderful lunch. This place is a must try. You won’t be sorry.
